Enemy at the Gates

The Berstrete Gates.

We stood next to remains of an old section of the 13th century taxation wall looking at the gates wondering if our coin was going to be good for trading in some liquid bread. As we entered, being unfamiliars, walking into the locally occupied pub felt like we were enemies at gates, with eyes watching our steps. Before we had even ordered our drinks we had various locals not wanting put our head on spikes, even when I mentioned that one of our party was from Ipswich, but actually wanting to exchange pleasantries and introductions. The patrons were very welcoming and it wasn’t long before we felt very relaxed and at home.

It was a confusing sight at first glance because there are no taps, just cans and bottles but not a bad selection. The landlord is well into his racing showcasing a few dozen hats from different tracks and events he has attended above the bar. We like the vintage looking British racing green couch set even though they look like they’ve had their day, there is also an unofficial smoking room but this may not be to suited to everyone’s nose.

Real spit and saw dust but we had a great laugh with everyone and at this good ‘proper pub’.
